DVD Description:
Renee Fleming finally appears on DVD in one of her greatest roles the Marschallin, in Richard Strauss's magnificent period-comedy of ever-changing love, ‘Der Rosenkavalier’. Her peerless performance is supported by a galactic cast (Thielemann), which includes Diana Damrau, Sophie Koch and Franz Hawlata.
Renee's eminent Straussian collaborator on her recent ‘Four Last Songs’ album, Christian Thielemann, joins her once again, conducting the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
Jonas Kaufmann makes a guest appearance as the Italian Tenor.
Richard Strauss's period comedy, to a libretto by Hofmannsthal, relates the bitter-sweet progress of ever-changing love. The Marschallin the elegant and worldly-wise heroine of the piece finally but gracefully cedes the affections of her youthful lover, Octavian, to the charm of the next generation, in the guise of the innocent young Sophie.
For this filming, Baden-Baden Festival Opera is re-staging the celebrated Herbert Wernicke production, already seen in Salzburg (1995) and Paris (1998) a stylish pastiche of vast mirrors, Viennese Baroque decorations, Hollywood-esque staircases and early 20th century evening wear.
Renee Fleming will repeat this role in autumn 2009, when she appears in the Metropolitan Opera’s production, to be broadcast live to cinemas worldwide.
Renee Fleming’s Marschallin follows her assumption of the title role in Richard Strauss’s ‘Arabella’, released on Decca DVD in 2008.
The major bonus film -- Talking Rosenkavalier -- features interviews with Thielemann, Fleming, Koch, Damrau, Hawlata, Kaufmann and Grundheber.
Filmed in High Definition Widescreen.
