Maria Tipo, whose first recording was hailed by Newsweek magazine as "the most spectacular album of the year" began her illustrious career at the age of four. Taught first by her mother and later receiving master classes from Casella and Agosti, Tipo won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Geneva at the age of seventeen. Soon after, she was performing around the world. The recipient of numerous awards, Tipo also is a dedicated educator, teaching master classes at the Gubbio Festival and the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, having served as a professor at the Conservatories of Bolzano and of Florence. Today, Maria Tipo is frequently invited to judge major international competitions. Peter Maag was born in Switzerland in 1919. His natural musical aptitude was quickly recognised, and his musical studies were carried out in Zurich. At the universities of Basel, Zurich and Geneva he studied theology and philosophy, an experience that was to lead him in unconventional directions in later life. Maag moved on to work as assistant to Wilhelm Furtwängler. Then came a meeting with Ernest Ansermet, who invited Maag to work as his assistant. In the 1970s, Peter Maag astonished the musical world by disappearing for two years into a Tibetan monastery. His explanation for this is revealing of the man: "I was having too much success. Those two years spent meditating and praying in a small cell purified my soul." He died in 2001, just days before his 82nd birthday.
