Few 17th-century French operas are as close to pure tragedy as Charpentier's Medea. The story, previously told in plays by Euripides, Seneca and Pierre Corneille, is well known. Medea, sorceress and murderess, has helped Jason steal the Golden Fleece, scattering corpses in her trail to escape the revengeful Acastus. She and Jason have found refuge in Corinth. King Creon gives the fugitives shelter but wants to be rid of the troublesome foreigner Medea; Jason is welcome as a hero who can help Creon in battle. Creon willingly offers Jason the hand of his daughter Creusa in marriage. Abandoned, rejected and forced into exile, Medea wreaks a terrible revenge, causing the deaths of Creon and Creusa and stabbing her own children to death to spite their loving father, Jason.
